5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional camera (compared to Panasonic TS3 or FT3), December 20, 2011
By

(REAL NAME)
I've been looking at waterproof and tough camera for over a year now... and I eventually chose this one!

About me: I'm a techie, 15 years in photography (started early), played with very many DSLR and compact cameras. I buy best-of-breed and I'm not very brand loyal (SLR I've used/owned include: Leica, Nikon, Pentax, Canon; Compact camera I've used/own: Canon, Panasonic, Olympus, and now Nikon).

I did a lot of research (including Canon, Pentax, Olympus) and eventually narrowed down to: Panasonic TS3 (aka FT3 in Europe), Nikon AW100, Sony TX10

** Sony TX10 - I love its image sensor, its rugged yet sleek ultra compactness. Unfortunately the lack of GPS killed it. For an all-weather sports camera, you expect to travel everywhere and often in areas you find difficult to mark on Google Maps.

** Panasonic TS3 vs Nikon AW100 - There are many forum that compare the specs of these two cameras so I won't bore you. Both have great specs for a rugged... Read more

I have had this camera a few days now and have been very impressed with the tests I've put it through thus far. This camera does everything Nikon says it will and does them all wonderfully.

Overall Build
This is a small camera in your hands which is a good and bad thing. It's great because it means it's easy to slip in your pants or shirt pocket and always keep with you. It weighs little enough that you hardly notice it's there. I see where some people could see this as an issue because the buttons on it are very small in order to have the back LCD as large as possible. It does not feel cheap even though it's made out of plastic and although I don't plan on doing a drop test, I am confident it would survive a drop from chest high.

Picture Quality
With an 8GB SD card I don't see a reason to shoot at any other setting than the highest resolution, so all my playing around with it was done at this setting. The JPEGs that come out look great. The... Read more

I tend to replace my point-n-shoot about every 3 years. I normally shoot a Nikon D90 but last year upgraded to a D7000.

[UPDATE Feb 2012] The original camera was replaced by Nikon since it failed on the 2nd use in water. This one worked through our Caribbean holiday for 4 full days before it started overheating and would not shut off. It stayed on until the battery drained. Leaving it "sit overnight" and then removing and recharging the battery got it working again, however I could feel the heat the longer it was in use.

The disappointing thing is this camera takes such great photos and now that we got it to work underwater, we know it takes fairly good underwater photos and video. But there's something wrong with either its design or the manufactured batch that we received. Had it too long to return to Amazon for a refund, so I'm probably going to send it a 2nd time back to Nikon. Note their repair service is great, but you have to be proactive and follow up or... 5.0 out of 5 stars Choosing between the T3i, T2i, 60D and 7D, February 27, 2011
By
dojoklo (Cambridge, MA) - See all my reviews
The Canon Rebel T3i takes the consumer level dSLR a couple steps closer to the mid-level Canon 60D with the addition of the rotating rear LCD screen, remote flash firing, and in-camera processing features. The already highly competent, older Rebel T2i already shared many important features with the 60D (and even features of the semi-pro 7D) including the 18 MP sensor, 63-zone exposure metering system, high ISO performance, HD movie capabilities, and Digic 4 image processor. With these new upgrades, it might make it even more difficult to choose between them. But there are some important differences.

If you are considering the Rebel T3i vs T2i, the Rebel T3i is replacing the T2i. Since both cameras share the same 18 megapixel sensor and Digic 4 processor, both the T2i and T3i will create images with exactly the same image quality, produce the same low light/ high ISO performance, shoot at 3.7 frames per second, and have nearly the same size and build quality. They are... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Busy Mom/The Family Photographer - T3i a great intro dSLR, March 21, 2011
I am not a camera expert, but rather, I'm a busy mom who likes to take pictures and who adores my subjects. This, then, is a review from a busy mom/amateur's point of view.

MY GOALS/EXPECTATIONS:

I have always been a photo fiend, taking my camera everywhere and pulling it out at any opportunity. While I'd gotten to a decent level of archiving important moments with my point-and-shoot cameras over the years, I wanted to take my photography to the next level. I was inspired by my brother-in-law's photos of his kids to take the dSLR plunge. But I knew (and still know), very little about professional photography. I wanted to start taking better photos right away. But I also wanted to have room to grow as a photographer and a camera that would grow with me.

I also wanted the focus to stay firmly on my family - while I was willing to invest some time and care into the camera, I didn't want it to become like a pet I had to constantly watch over. While any... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars a high end for DSLR beginners!, February 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I was so surprised how light is the T3i, (in comparison to 7D /50D or 60D) with its 18.0 mega pixel the CMOS sensor captures superb image quality with low noise and natural color
The EOS T3i, positioned between the EOS T2i and EOS 60D, features scene intelligent auto, 3-inch vari-angle clear view LCD and a selection of five creative filters including the new fish eye effect (which is awesome!!)
honestly, once you get this camera, no need for Photoshop.

I initially purchased the 7D Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-inch LCD (Body Only), but then I returned it due to the more complicated usage, and the post-photo processing/ editing necessary for making pictures look better.

T3i comes with an instructional guide built in, like the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars READ THIS before making a buying decision, December 7, 2011

This review is from: Samsung EC-PL120 Digital Camera with 14.2 MP and 5x Optical Zoom (Black) (Camera)
I almost did not purchase this camera because of some negative reviews. However, I have and I'd like to address the negative comments.

BLURRY PICTURES - when taken in low light conditions:
YES - this does occur. It did when I used the camera for the first time.
REASON - the user may not see the funky 'hand' that is displayed which indicates a questionable photo.
The simple solution is to set the MODE to 'SMART AUTO' ! THIS SHOULD BE THE DEFAULT MODE for the camera.
The first photos I took in low light were blurry. I thought the camera was defective. After I went into the user manual (which was NOT a hard copy but a disk) I figured out what was going on. Samsung should put in instructions on how to use the 'common' functions of a camera.

DIFFICULT TO USE:
MAYBE YES - For the 'average user' who has little experience in photography. But only -IF- they do not set the camera in 'SMART AUTO', or try and figure out what all the MENU... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done sir.., June 14, 2011
This review is from: Samsung EC-PL120 Digital Camera with 14.2 MP and 5x Optical Zoom (Black) (Camera)
Apparently I went to MIT to study rocket science since I found this camera to be perfectly user friendly and straightforward. Quick, quiet, fun, "cute" even, this thing is a real joy to own thus far. At the price I paid (~$120 for camera and 8gb sdhc card and reader, bag, cleaning kit, tripod, and sweet cardboard box my cats love) this camera can't be beat for similar items elsewhere. The front facing lcd I didn't think much of at first has been rather useful taking (accurate) self pics and not merely the gimmick I thought it was going to be. Highly recommended...

I really like this camera, the only thing to watch out for is that it does not use an SD card like it implies. It actually uses a MicroSD wich is not so bad but was not prepared for it.
