4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advanced Point and Shoot!, April 26, 2011
By
BenRias (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full HD Video and Ultra Wide Angle Lens (Silver) (Camera)
Please note that for a point and shoot, this camera deserves a 5-star review. But in fairness to certain small details, and Amazon's inability to allow users to give partial stars (e.g. 4.75 stars), I will have to settle for 4-stars.

Cosmetic PROS: Unlike some of the SD and Elph cameras in the past, this one feels solid. Canon even improved, to some extent, the flimsy-feeling battery door. It is a HUGE improvement over the previous flimsy plastic doors on earlier models. The large 3"x1" screen is sharp and beautiful and gives an accurate depiction of what your camera will capture. Switching between full program mode and full automatic is a simple slide button on the top of the camera allowing an advanced user and a novice to both have their options easily. This also prevents any accidental mode changes that can happen with setting-wheels or external buttons.

Cosmetic CONS: The lens cover seems a touch too loose, at least on my specific camera. It rattles... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE my new camera!, August 1, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full HD Video and Ultra Wide Angle Lens (Silver) (Camera)
I love this camera! I wanted a higher end point and shoot camera that could keep up with my kids and do well in low light. I read a lot of reviews and settled on this one. I thought about the ELPH 300hs but decided I was too used to using the touch screen on my Sony Cybershot to go back to buttons. I love the touch screen! The menus are well laid out and it is easy to find things. I was a little worried it would take me awhile to figure out the Canon menus since I have been a Sony user for so long, but I am not having any trouble at all! I am having fun trying out all of the programs/effects on the camera. The Kids and Pets setting is just what I was looking for. My kids don't sit still for me to take pictures and now I can just snap pictures of them on the go without the picture being too blurry. After reading reviews I was worried about battery life. I decided to buy and extra battery since we had a big wedding we were going to and I didn't want my camera to die before the day was... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures...Easy to use touch screen, June 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full HD Video and Ultra Wide Angle Lens (Silver) (Camera)
The provided pictures I uploaded to Amazon show you how great this camera is. These shots where within the first 10 minutes of running the camera and shot in full auto mode. Color is great and clarity is super. I felt all Nikons in the price range had color issues and the Sonys looked dark and muddy. It was between this and the SX230 but for me it came down to this:
1: 500HS has a 2.0 f stop which means it will preform better in low light than the SX230 (f/3.1)
2: 500HS has better macro at 3cm vs 5cm for those extreme close ups
3. 500HS shoots 3.4fps vs 0.8 in the SX230
4. SX230 has a GPS which I could careless about. What is the point of this? We have survived for years without it. Why all of a sudden is this important?
5. SX230 has great zoom but clarity and light is lost the farther you zoom so its not really a benefit to me.

The SX230 is a great camera but the above mentioned which directly affects picture quality pushed me to the 500HS... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a "full service" waterproof camera for all those fun-filled vacations, let the kids go crazy!, June 10, 2009
By

This review is from: Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch LCD (Camera)
So many of our family's vacations are at beaches, lakes, water-parks, or hikes and bringing along the sensitive digital camera has always been a problem. If I carried it then I could not get in water and I spent more time worrying whether the sand would damage it than taking pics of my family. I lost a camera on a Disney Park fun ride when water suddenly splashed into the ride and we were miserable for losing all our pics. With this camera you can drop it in water and not worry about your pics unless you lose the camera (happened to me another time when I fell overboard and dropped a camera in the open sea). I have other cameras that I have been too lazy to review but I am excited about this one so I sat down to write this review.

This is like a regular Canon Camera with all the features and the added waterproof feature. It can be compared to the new SD780 IS which sells for fifty bucks less. The features are similar, except that this one is waterproof and bulkier and does... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great waterproof camera, May 26, 2009

This review is from: Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch LCD (Camera)
I've been playing with my new Powershot D10 for about a week and really like it. I have been using Canon SLRs for 25+ years, AE1 Program, A1, Elan 7e, and Digital Rebel. When I started looking for a waterproof camera to take snorkeling, my first choice was Canon, based on my many years of satisfaction with their products, and I was very lucky that this camera was released two weeks before leaving for vacation. (Amazon had been showing the camera as available for pre-order until earlier today. I purchased mine from a local camera store.)

I'm very impressed with the picture quality on this camera. The 12 megapixel sensor, coupled with a dozen shooting modes, produce an excellent image. I'm used to controlling aperture and shutter speed on the SLR, so simply selecting "portrait" or "night exposure" mode and letting the camera do all the work just seems too easy. Or, if selecting "portrait" is too difficult, you can select "auto" and just let the camera do it all. Movie quality... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great camera with a couple of inconveniences, July 13, 2009

This review is from: Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch LCD (Camera)
This is a great, quick camera that focuses fast and takes good pictures. The interface is well thought out; For example, half-pressing the shutter button always takes you straight into camera mode.

It's perfect for wet environments, like swimming, rafting, etc. Most of this has already been covered in other reviews, so I'll just post my biggest complaints, followed by a few tips for new owners.

Complaints:

1) The camera is very thick, much thicker than I thought based on the pictures. It is almost as thick as a credit card is tall! Forget fitting it into a pocket comfortably. Basically, this camera is as thick as a regular 3X zoom PowerShot with its lens fully extended.

2) Expensive, overpriced accessories. I like the strap being attachable at any of the four corners, and this has actually come in useful. I think a neck strap would be even more useful, but Canon expects me to pay $100-130 for a dingy kit (AKT-DC1) of a few straps and colored... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera for the price, April 16, 2011
By
Hitman (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews
I currently own a D90 but decided to buy this camera for occasions not convenient to carry a bulky camera. I have used this camera during last weekend shooting under daylight, indoor and low light condition and I am really impressed with camera.

What I like:

- Outside shooting: Excellent picture
- Indoor shooting: Excellent picture even under auto mode. Apparently we cannot compare with DSL camera but the picture quality is much better than previous Sony digital cameras that I owned (See uploaded images)
- Superior Auto Mode: a new feature that automatically reduce blur and noise after each shooting.
- Sweep Panorama is great and time saving
- 3D picture is a nice feature, I tried it with my 3D TV and it looks great, although it is not as good as you are watching 3D movie from Bluray but you actually can see some depths of the image.
- 1080i movie recording is great even watching on 55" TV.
- Can use both SDHC & Duo cards.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good camera. Not perfect, but still very good., April 10, 2011
By
**Updated June 30, 2011**

After our trip to Disneyland and California Adventures I have a few issues with this camera. When using it in a setting like this; IE turning it on and off, focusing and zooming, quick shots in an array of settings... she didn't do so well. The biggest issues was focusing. I was wondering why this camera wouldn't focus at times when the settings didn't change. Turns out that I had to turn the camera off and back on, almost like I had to reset it. NOT COOL! At a theme park like this where you need to get the shot on the fly, I was getting very frustrated. I still like this camera, but things like this reinforce that my next camera will be a DSLR. I know it's still a point and shoot camera but something like this is unforgiveable. I'll be heading to San Diego next and I'll keep an eye out for this. Oh... get another battery for this puppy as well. I took about 245 shots and two short videos before my camera went out. THAT was my fault... Read more

I'm gonna make it short:

PROS:
- amazing daytime photos with vibrant colors.
- nice slow syncro flash mode.
- video quality is awesome.
- the price is unbeatable.
- Nice panoramic photos

CONS:
- slow and lagged user interface.
- microphone sucks. any simple breeze will cause distortion in sound. if you want a camera to use at clubs, bars or other loud places, this one in not for you.
- backlit sensor almost makes no difference. still very grainy photos in Twilight Handheld mode.
- does not come with a case
- you can hear the lens motor in videos when zooming in/out
